Cool Science Experiments For Kids
This site contains some science experiments for kids to do @home or school-
June 19th, 2009Living ThingsKids, today we gonna learn two new words.
STIMULI and RESPONSE
So, what is Stimuli ? and whst is Response?
Let’s define Stimuli:
Stimuli are changes that occur around us in the environment. Hey doc, the words changes around us sound deep.
Ok, ok. Let me give you guys some example of changes a.k.a Stimuli
Stimuli is known to us as touch, pain, heat, cold, sounds, food (chemicals) and light.Let me further explain the stimuli to you.
- You feel and touch objects, that is a stimuli
- You look at things around you, that is a stimuli
- You feel cold, or hot, that is a stimuli
- You feel pain whe you fall down, that is a stimuli
- You hear sound, that is a stimuli
- You taste a burger, that is a stimuliBy now you should know what is astimuli. But, in our daily life, we deal with millions of stimuli and we call that Stimulus, which mean a lot of stimuli or plural form of stimuli.
When a stimuli or stimulus come to us. We response to it or them.
For every stimuli there is a response to it weather we aware or not. For example, when we touch anything hot like iron, we will feel pain. The response would be pulling back the hand to avoid pain.Human need to respond to stimuli in order to protect themselves from danger or for survival.
For example:
Stimuli Responses
Stepping on sharp objects like thumbtacks

We quickly pull away our foot

Smelling bad smells

Covering nose quickly to keep out the bad smells

The sound of loud thunder

We cover our ears when we hear a very loud sound

June 16th, 2009SensesKids, do you know that the skin is the biggest organ in our body? And, do you also know that our skin cells can live for three weeks.
Today, we gonna have some fun with our skin.
The materials required are:-
1. Our body
2. Paper clips, you need at least two.
Hi Kids...
Steps:-
1.Shape you paper clip like this (One Paper Clip)
By now you should know what do I meant by One Paper Clip...
and like this (Two Paper Clip)
Is just two pointed metal
2. Ask a friend to close his eyes. Prick the palm of his hand with one paper clip. Prick his palm again, this time with two paper clips. Record the results (whether the stimulus was felt or not) in table below 3. Repeat step 2 to test the skin in different partsof the body such as fingertips, arms, neck and knee. You should get the results something like this:-
(√) shows that the skin can detect the stimulus(X) shows that the skin cannot detect the stimulus
Parts of the body Prick with one paper clip Prick with two paper clip Palm √ √ √ √ X √ Fingertip √ √ √ √ √ √ Neck √ √ √ √ √ √ Knee √ √ √ X X X Arm √ √ √ X X X Explanations:-
After this experiments, you will find out that different part of out body have different sensitivity and the skin around the neck and the fingertips is more sensitive than the skin on the palm, knee and arms. This is because sensitivity of our skin depands on:-
a) the thickness of our skin
b) the number of sensory receptors (will be wirtting a more simple version on this soon…for please refer to Wikipedia for now)
